Presbyterian Women

2019 USA Mission Experience

I bring you greetings from the Finger Lakes Region of New York State! As your USAME representative for the PW Synod of the Southwest, I wish to thank all of you for the opportunity to experience the joy of getting to know twenty-two Presbyterian Women who represented synods from across the country as we learned about the rich history of empowered women (and men) who helped to shape the freedoms that we now enjoy.

We learned of the struggles to gain rights for women that began in Seneca Falls, New York, in July of 1848. The Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was not ratified until August, 1920. Famous people like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, William H. Seward and wife, Frances, participated in the fight for women's rights and abolition of slavery. Many slaves sought freedom through the Underground Railroad that allowed them to escape into Canada. The Erie Canal opened up the region for commerce from the east coast and regions west of New York. Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to become a medical doctor in the United States in 1847 from Geneva Medical College in Geneva, New York.

For ten days, we became immersed in the history and culture of the region. We were showered with hospitality from numerous churches whose women and men provided us fabulous lunches and suppers and shared with us the mission projects that their churches provide. Tours included: Erie Canal Museum, Matilda Joslyn Gage House, Safe Haven Holocaust Refugee Shelter Museum, Civil War Prison Camp, Camp Whitman Summer Camp, John W. Jones Museum, etc.

Since I returned home, I have had many friends at Desert Palms ask me when they will be able to hear about my trip. Our Desert Palms Presbyterian Women's group has scheduled for me to do a presentation in the Fellowship Hall at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 22, with a continental breakfast provided by Rebecca Circle. Be sure to put this event on your calendars. I have so much to share!
