A pizza party was held in Fellowship Hall for eleven  students from the high school graduating class of 2019 and their families to celebrate their acceptance into Desert Palms Scholarship program.  Each scholarship covers the credit hours for a two year degree, and a book allowance, at the community colleges in Arizona.  If a student completes the requirements to obtain an Associate’s Degree, this will be a value of $7,000 to $8,000.  All will begin their studies with the other freshmen in August 2019.

Each student is assigned a member from the congregation to serve as their mentor as they navigate the process of pursuing their dream of obtaining an education and a career in their field of study.  The students, with their mentor designated in parentheses are as follows:

Arizona Virtual Academy

Sophie Fernandez (Roy Carpenter)

Peoria High School

Judith Rea Ramirez (Dave Montgomery), Edwin Santibanez (Bill Hunter), Angelica Villalobos (Barbara Bostrom)

Valley Vista School

Susana Castro Navarro (Shelia Frens), Kayoni Hughes (Bonnie Boyce Wilson), Hailey Zuniga (Bruce Outzen)

Willow Canyon High School

Jessica Braun (Linda Gamborg), Emma Hanson (Charlene & Lee Weir), Mathew McClure (Eileen Bump), Brian Puiu (Jim & Dee Vaughn)

These students will join those who are continuing in the program, a number that could be fifteen to eighteen, depending on courses completed in the summer term.

This is Desert Palms largest mission program with expenditure of $63,000 in 2018 and a projected $80,000+ in 2019.  It is funded by contributions from the congregation and distributions from our $1.8 million endowment.  If you received help with your education, please consider a contribution as a way to “pay it back”.
