Caryl Shafer

 

Caryl Shafer was selected as Desert Palms’ nominee to receive the 24th annual Senior Service Award, sponsored by the Older Adult Concerns and Celebration Committee of Grand Canyon Presbytery. She will be honored and presented a certificate of appreciation at a luncheon on Thursday, April 17 at the Orangewood Presbyterian Church in Phoenix. The mission of the Committee is to raise awareness and celebrate the treasures and gifts that seniors give to others through church and community.

 

Caryl and her husband Charles (deceased) moved to Sun City West in 1986 from Woodland Hills, CA, and joined Desert Palms Presbyterian Church in 1987. She was ordained an elder in 1990 and is currently serving a second term now as Chair of Membership Care. She is also a Stephen Minister, leader for Abigail Circle, a liturgist, does home communion, member of Women of Desert Palms, Fellowship Chair for Summer Survivors program, an usher and greeter, and chair of Open Partner Bridge. She has been moderator of the Deacon Board, lead usher, a Friendship Group leader, and on the church officer Nominating Committee.

 

Caryl’s community work is currently with the Sun Health Auxiliary special fund raising events, president and founding member of Circle of Caring Friends, the auxiliary of Interfaith Community Care, and member on the Community Fund of Sun City West Board of Directors. She is a past president of the West Valley Symphony Guild, was a PORA director for six years, precinct chair on the Sun City volunteer committee, a board member of the Northwest Valley Chamber of Commerce, member of the Sun City West Business and Professional Women’s Association, and on committees at Briarwood Country Club.
