Robin McFarland Scholarship

In life Robin McFarland checked all the boxes:  daughter, sibling, wife, mother, teacher and surrogate mother to her many students.

However, the one that she was most noted for at Desert Palms was Christian Educator.  She was always involved in Bible classes, either as a teacher or attendee.  Her passion for Christian Education was unending.

As a junior and senior high teacher she taught both French and English in the San Jose, California, school district, while also serving as the Director of Christian Education for Folsom Presbyterian Church.  Robin held the same job at Christ Presbyterian Church in Crown Point, Indiana, where she and her husband Ray lived during one of Ray’s many job relocations. Robin took active roles in her churches while they lived in Australia, Colorado, Utah and Arizona.

Robin’s time at Desert Palms was unique. She and Ray joined in 1998, but left in 2003 to move back to Colorado so Ray could accept a job that would fund their retirement travel budget. In 2008 they returned to Arizona and Desert Palms and began a travel regimen that would include twenty cruises. Robin continued her passion for Christian Education by serving on the Session as head of that committee for several years. She also served on the Presbytery’s Commission on Ministry.

Ray has generously donated the money to create the named scholarship in honor of his late wife to recognize her great passion for education. This is the tenth named scholarship that has been created under our endowment program. We have twenty-two young people enrolled in the community colleges this semester receiving varying levels of support.

A named scholarship is a way to honor yourself or a loved one. We control our assets while we are alive, but once we die that control is passed to someone else.

Please consider creating a named scholarship while you can and see the tremendous difference Desert Palms makes in the lives of these young individuals as they create the base for their future employment.
