SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY
FEBRUARY 5
More than 20 years ago the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group:
Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, Help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.
Since that day, more than $81 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl programs. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Souper Bowl weekend into one of the nation’s largest Celebrations of giving and serving. What started as a program to teach young people the joy of making a positive difference in people’s lives through volunteering and sharing has evolved into a multigenerational event that goes far beyond it’s originators’ dreams.
Here at Desert Palms we have participated in the event for many years. This year the money collected will go to the St. Mary’s Food Bank “Kid’s Café” in Surprise. We have watched this operation grow from a few hundred meals to the present operation in their new “kitchen” which is sending 3,000 meals a day to distribution centers across the country. They are determined that no child should go to bed hungry and have plans to continue to increase their output to meet that goal.
The Mission Committee will have members with soup kettles at the doors as you exit church on Sunday, February 5 to collect your donations. At Desert Palms we’ve shown many times that we know what it feels like to help feed the hungry so please be generous and drive home feeling great!
