ABS Message from Jim

COVID changed many things, and not all were negative… some good changes came about at Desert Palms. We introduced live stream worship—now our homebound members and those away from Sun City West can watch worship from home. We created a Facebook page and rejuvenated our church website. We introduced Constant Contact so people can register for events via email. In June 2020, we hosted our first virtual Adult Bible School.

As June 2021 was approaching, the Spiritual Life and Growth committee had to make a decision. Was Adult Bible School going to be virtual in 2021 or in person? Committee members wanted an in-person gathering. There was concern, however, that some people wouldn’t be ready to be back together in person by June 2021. Ultimately, the committee preferred September and chose Monday, September 20th through Thursday, September 23rd. On account of this decision, we will host Adult Bible School in September this year and June 2022.

Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Grayson Carter, Associate Professor of Church History at Fuller Seminary, where he teaches courses in church history, C. S. Lewis, Christian spirituality, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Before that, he served in similar academic positions at Oxford and North Carolina. He is the author of Anglican Evangelicals: Protestant Secessions from the Church of England, c. 1800–1850 (2001/2016), and Light amid Darkness: Memoirs of Daphne Randall (2016). From 2007 to 2015, he was General Editor of Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal. He has published over a hundred book chapters, journal articles, book reviews, and articles in academic works of reference. Currently, he is writing a volume on the Western Schism – a major clerical disruption from the Church that commenced in 1815, and co-editing the diary of the nineteenth century Oxford clergyman, John Hill.

For our Adult Bible Study this September, Dr. Carter will share four lectures based upon Dietrich Bonhoeffer. These will include:

  • Lecture 1: Who Was Dietrich Bonhoeffer?: An Introduction to His Life and Writings
  • Lecture 2: Bonhoeffer and the Church
  • Lecture 3: Bonhoeffer and the Jewish “Problem”
  • Lecture 4: Christianity without Religion in a World Come of Age

Each of the four evenings will begin at 5:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall with an opening. A catered dinner will be served around 5:15 p.m. The presentations will begin at 6:15 p.m. and conclude at approximately 7:00 p.m.

This year’s mission proceeds will go to the Presbyterian Youth Triennium event.

The cost for the four nights is $40 and will be used to offset the cost of dinners each evening. Tickets will be on sale in the church office beginning in August. Seating will be available at the event for those who choose to attend only the program.
